Guide

Getting started

  1. Give the job a name in Slat wall › Shape, then set the length and height.
  2. Choose the posts and plates in Frame, and the slats and spacing in Slats.
  3. Set the boards, finish, hardware and sheet size in Boards & site.
  4. Check the 3D view and the problems shown in red, then use the outputs below it.

Every change is saved in the project as you go. Undo and Redo (Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y) take changes back. New project starts from the default settings; Projects opens or deletes saved ones.

Designing a slat wall

  • Length and height are on the screen's centre line, from the outside of each end.
  • Lock spacing keeps the gap and changes the length; use the arrows by the length to add or remove a slat.
  • Corners and chained walls turn the screen, or join on a new wall with its own height, ends and plates.
  • Wall angles cut an end to sit against a wall that isn't square.
  • Box sections: full boards, set back, internal supports (0, or 2 to 6), plate cross supports, top cap and steel core are in Frame.
  • Boards: posts and plates can be a thinner board than the slats.

Room walls

  • Open the Room tab, or press Room in the 3D view, and use Top view to draw.
  • Draw walls, then click each corner on the floor. Click the first point to close the room; Esc or right-click stops.
  • Wall lengths are the room-side face, corner to corner. The thickness goes outside the room; Flip thickness puts it on the other side.
  • Drag an orange dot to move a corner. Drag a wall to pull it out or push it in.
  • Double-click a wall (or ⫽ in the list) to split it, so one piece can be pulled out on its own.
  • Rectangle room makes four walls from an inside width and depth.
  • Each project has its own room. A slat wall started from a room shares that room.

Slat walls in the room

  • Click a slat wall to edit it: its settings come into the Slat wall tab and the room stays.
  • Drag a slat wall to move it. Its ends snap to other slat walls and to walls.
  • The blue ring past a free end turns the selected slat wall about its other end.
  • An end on a wall gets its end cut to the wall's angle; changing that wall angle in Shape swings the slat wall to match.
  • Add a saved project in the Screens list, or use a point's menu (see Right-click menus).

Snapping and exact moves

  • Things snap to wall corners (orange), green points on walls and slat walls (corners, end middles, quarters and middles of sides), along walls, to 15° and to 50 mm.
  • Snap on/off in the 3D view, or hold Alt, places things exactly where you put them.
  • Exact distance: while dragging, type a number (a box shows it) and press Enter. It moves that far in the direction you're dragging; on a blue ring it sets the angle.
  • Point to point: right-click a slat wall's green point (it goes red), then click the point it should go to.
  • Dimensions in the 3D view shows or hides sizes, wall lengths, run angles and the dots.

Right-click menus

  • A point (orange corner or green point): start a room wall there, start a new slat wall there (a new project in this room), add a saved project there, or move this design there. On the side of a slat wall a new one starts square off it; elsewhere it stands with its back against the face. A corner also offers Move the whole wall chain.
  • A wall: delete it, delete its chain, split it, or copy the chain.
  • A slat wall: edit it, flip it, turn it 90°, copy it (same design, or as a new design), or remove it from the room.

On a tablet

  • Long-press (hold still about half a second) instead of right-click.
  • In top view one finger moves the plan; in 3D one finger turns it. Two fingers zoom.
  • After dragging something, tap Exact distance… for a number pad.
  • Use Snap on/off instead of Alt, and Move the whole wall chain (long-press a corner) instead of Shift.

My materials

Name each board as you order it. Tap the first box to add a swatch photo (it is scaled down to save space); without one, the face and grain colours are used in the 3D view. Tick Woodgrain to keep the grain running along the parts on the sheet layout. Up to 60 materials, saved in this browser as you type.
